In another great feat, some talented students from Limerick will be flying the green flag high at the Junk Kouture World Finals, a creative fashion phenomenon. Led by a group of secondary school students from Limerick schools, the young designers whose work would be made of recyclable materials will be vying with those from other global cities such as New York, Paris, and London.
Calling themselves Junk Kouture, an international organization that encourages youngsters to design various high-fashion outfits from scraps and waste only have their designs showcased to the public. The competition has received much attention for two main reasons, which relate to the promotion of youth innovation and the creation of a sustainable message worldwide.
This year the Irish concepts are also some of the strongest, with concepts involving plastic bottles, rusty metal, and recycled fabrics. For example, the contest is to be evaluated by judicial members such as fashion industrialists together with environmentalists.
Before the world finals, the participants from Limerick participated in different workshops and mentorship schemes to advance their skills as well as enhance the creation of their designs. This journey to the finals has been seen as a combination of arts and passions towards the environment with each of them contributing his or her idea and input into the project.
The Junk Kouture World Finals are planned to be held in November, and the audience in Ireland is eagerly awaiting it. This competition will afford young designers the platform to showcase their talents within the international fashion industry whilst also aspiring to create awareness of environmental issues through fashion.
The Limerick team is now excited and ready to go to represent Ireland at the world level not only talents for the competition but also the Irish values of progression to a sustainable future.
