University of Limerick and GAA Celebrate Decades of Partnership

The University of Limerick (UL) showcased its strong ties with the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) at a celebratory breakfast event held on campus this week. The event highlighted UL’s contributions to fostering GAA talent and its ongoing commitment to promoting Ireland’s national games through education, research, and facilities.

Athletes, alumni, and university staff gathered to reflect on the decades-long, deep-rooted connection between UL and the GAA. Keynote speakers included UL President Dr. Kerstin Mey and GAA Director General Tom Ryan, who both emphasized the collaboration’s mutual benefits.

“I am especially pleased that UL has been the institution where sporting talent was often developed and the Gaelic game’s ethos maintained.” Dr. Mey said. “GAA is not merely about games but the Gaelic culture, Gaelic identity, Gaelic communities, and all the principles which our university cherishes.”

The event celebrated the achievements of numerous UL alumni who have excelled in Gaelic games, many of whom have gone on to represent their counties at the highest level. The university’s state-of-the-art facilities, including the UL Arena and the GAA pitch, have been pivotal in attracting and developing top-tier athletes.
