Limerick Gardaí Issue Stark Warning Over Dangerous Driving Behaviors

Limerick Gardaí has issued a stern warning to drivers about the rising dangers of reckless driving habits, particularly the use of mobile phones and the consumption of alcohol and drugs. These behaviors are leading to “lethal” situations on local roads, endangering lives and causing an alarming increase in preventable accidents.

In a statement released today, Garda officials emphasized the gravity of the issue, noting that distracted driving and impairment are two of the leading causes of road fatalities in the region. Recent checkpoints conducted across Limerick revealed a worrying trend, with several drivers caught texting while driving and others testing positive for alcohol and drug use.

Superintendent Mary O’Connell called on motorists to focus more on protection rather than on convenience. “Driving under the influence of any kind or even using a phone while driving isn’t lawful—it is lethal. ‘Every time a driver turns a tap to look at a screen or gets behind the wheel while impaired, a tragedy is made,’ she said.

The Gardaí highlighted several incidents in recent weeks, including a near-fatal collision on the N18 caused by a driver who was texting. In another case, a motorist under the influence of cannabis was apprehended after veering dangerously into oncoming traffic. Both incidents could have ended in catastrophic loss of life.

To combat these issues, Limerick Gardaí has ramped up road safety campaigns and enforcement measures. More checkpoints will be in place, with officers using advanced drug-testing kits and monitoring for phone usage. Penalties for offenders include heavy fines, penalty points, and potential driving bans.

In addition to enforcement, Gardaí are urging the public to take responsibility for their actions. Local road safety advocate Sean Daly emphasized the importance of community cooperation, saying, “We all share the road. It’s crucial to make the right choices—put the phone away, and never drive impaired.”

This warning comes as Gardaí prepares for the busy holiday season, a time when road traffic typically increases. Authorities are reminding everyone to make safety a priority to ensure a tragedy-free season.
